"R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y. LESPONSIBILITY." These were the last words uttered by Dumisani Khumalo on stage at the Pretoria Auditorium Centre in an annual event held by the Department of Education.
Khumalo had been the general public's favorite due to based in the rural eMnambithi in KZN. The 10-year old had endured many unfortunate circumstances, like losing both his parents at the age of 7 and having to take care of his disabled granny.
He had risen above all these adversities with the help of his teacher, Ms. Khuzwayo. Khuzwayo discovered Khumalo's sheer brilliance after she found the young man reading a book about financial literacy during lunchtime.
She approached then 4th-grader, who wasn't in any of her classes at the time, with a few bombastic words, and she was shocked that a child that young didn't make any mistake.
Ms. Khumalo would then enlist Dumisani in their school spelling bee competition. He came out victorious, and he would also proceed to achieve the same feat at the provincial level.
It was at the nationals that he lost on his last and final word, responsibility. Pronunciation at the national level is of high importance, and this impacted badly on the young student's chances of taking home the ultimate prize.
Lisolethu Nyawo won the competition after spelling "Irrevocably."
