Martha Harlow took Eddie McNaughton her ex-husband after he refused to pay the monthly fee they agreed upon at the time of their separation. A monthly amount of $7,600 (R112 000) was set by the ex-couple's lawyer after the two lovebirds had no warmth left in their nest. The money was to be used to take care of Randy, the chicken. Her husband had no problem with the arrangement as he is an oil-magnate and a man who likes to flaunt his wealth at every chance he gets. However, things went sour when he chose not to transfer the amount 3 months ago and this did not sit well with Ms. Harlow.
Ms. Harlow then sent McNaughton an email when she had realized that 3 days had passed and there was still no sign of the papgeld or a word from from her former lover. Mr McNaughton never responded to the emails and this then led Harlow to escalate things a bit, she gave him a ring but she was taken straight to voicemail. Ms. Harlow says, "It was after I sent an email and trying to call him with no luck that I decided to pay him a visit. I was chased away by his bodyguards at the entrance and this really hurt me." Harlow then decided to give McNaughton a month and he still repeated what he had done the previous month.
Ms. Harlow headed to a mediator (court) to file a formal arrangement for the financial duties. She won her case but her joy ended two days later when she found Randy shot dead. CCTV footage revealed it was Eddie who ended the chicken's life and he was then charged with murder and senteced to life.
